Menger Family and Menger Hotel
William Menger was the founder of the Menger Hotel on Alamo Square in downtown San Antonio in 1859 on the site of his brewery and boardinghouse. The arrival of the railroad in 1877 greatly increased business, and numerous additions were undertaken in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Menger Hotel is known for its bar, a replica of London's House of Lords Club, where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders (volunteer U.S. Cavalry) in 1898. ("Menger Hotel" by Eleanor Stuck.
