Mary Agnes Rodriguez was born and raised in San Antonio’s Westside. Rodriguez has exhibited her work in numerous museums and cultural centers, among them the Texas Women’s Museum (Dallas), the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, Centro Cultural Aztlan, Gallista Gallery, and 1906 Gallery. Her murals and canvases are known for the deep ways in which they reflect the artist’s personal experience, as well as her influences, which are drawn from traditional practices and icons in her Westside community. Rodriguez’s work is also included in the major touring exhibition “Chicano Now: American Expressions,” which was spearheaded by Cheech Marín. Mary Agnes Rodriguez’s work continues to document political issues while empowering all segments of her community, especially young people. Activism is a theme Rodriguez many times infuses in her work. Rodriguez always invites viewers to arrive at an understanding of her images through their own interpretations, rather than relying on any ‘professional’ critique to reach their conclusions. |
